On July 4^th, one of my best friends, Samantha Mitchell, passed away in the early morning hours. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, on her 24^th birthday. After a year she was declared cancer-free, but by the time she was 26, the cancer returned as Stage IV and spread to her lungs, bones, and brain.

We were fortunate that she responded well to treatment and lived another five and a half years. They weren’t easy years, but she was stubborn, and didn’t let multiple broken bones and countless surgeries (including two brain surgeries) slow her down for long.

Last year's Read-a-thon exceeded all expectations. This year we have more motivation than ever -- to honour our beautiful Sammy and carry on her legacy.
